The sheen of satin-weave silk is structural — not a finish, not a coating.
Why Two "100% Silk" Sets Feel Nothing Alike
Both are labelled 100% Mulberry Silk. One stays luminous and fluid after years of washing. The other goes thin and dull within a season. The label is identical. The difference is Momme — a number most brands never bother to display.
Momme (mm) is the silk industry's standard weight measure. The calculation:
A piece of silk 45 inches wide by 100 yards long — its weight in pounds is its Momme number.
In practical terms: 1 Momme ≈ 4.34 g/m². A 19mm fabric weighs roughly 82 g/m²; 25mm weighs around 108 g/m². Higher Momme means more silk per square metre — denser weave, deeper sheen, longer lifespan.
This Isn't a Blended Fabric — It's a Satin Weave
Silk-cotton blends typically mix both fibres into the same yarn. The skin-contact surface ends up being a mix of both materials.
Silk-cotton satin weave works differently — and the distinction matters.
In satin weave, the warp threads float across multiple weft threads — keeping silk at the surface where it counts.
In a satin weave, warp threads (running lengthwise) float over four or more weft threads before interlacing. The warp dominates the face of the fabric — which means the surface your skin actually rests against is almost entirely warp.
In our construction:
- Warp: 100% Mulberry Silk filament — what your skin touches is pure silk
- Weft: Long-staple combed cotton — positioned within the structure, contributing dimensional stability, washability, and durability without appearing at the surface
The silk gives you the smooth, temperature-regulating skin contact it's known for. The cotton makes the fabric more dimensionally stable and wash-tolerant than pure silk — a genuine long-term practicality for everyday bedding use. Neither fibre compromises the other.
19 / 22 / 25 Momme — Which to Choose
| Momme | Weight | Durability | Ideal For |
|---|---|---|---|
| 19mm | Light, fluid | Moderate | Summer use; first silk purchase |
| 22mm | Balanced | Good | Year-round everyday use |
| 25mm | Substantial | Excellent | Gift-quality; long-term investment |
For most buyers, 22mm is the practical choice. Heavy enough to last, light enough to use all year, and the satin sheen is rich without being excessive.
